Permethrin is an antiparasitic medication that effectively kills tiny insects (mites) and their eggs, responsible for causing scabies. It is also effective against head lice that attach to the scalp and cause irritation.
Crotamiton belongs to two classes of medicines, antipruritics, and scabicides. As an antipruritic, it helps relieve itching. Simultaneously, as a scabicide, it works to kill the mites that cause scabies, providing relief from the condition.
A scabicide and antipruritic drug is Unix C. It is used to treat scabies, skin irritation, and infestation caused by microscopic insects. It kills the mites and their eggs in order to function. It is also used to treat skin irritation and itching.
Permethrin is a pyrethroid bactericide and a scabicide. It causes paralysis and death of parasites by inhibiting the influx of sodium ions through neuronal membrane channels slowing repolarization.
Crotamiton has bactericidal and antipruritic effects against Sarcoptes scabei. It is also an effective germicide.
Unix-C Lotion is suitable for adults, children aged 2 months and above, and the elderly. It should only be used externally and should not be applied to broken skin, mucous membranes, or near the eyes.
To use Permethrin & Crotamiton lotion:
Before starting treatment with permethrin for scabies, corticosteroids should be discontinued to avoid treating eczema-like reactions. Using corticosteroids can reduce the immune response to mites, potentially exacerbating the scabies infection. However, the interaction between permethrin and corticosteroids is unlikely to increase adverse effects or reduce the effectiveness of the scabies treatment. It is essential to follow the prescribed treatment plan and consult with a healthcare professional to ensure the most effective and safe management of scabies.
The combination of permethrin 5% and crotamiton 10% is contraindicated in patients known to be sensitive to permethrin or crotamiton.
There is no experience to assess the safety of permethrin and crotamiton during pregnancy and therefore should not be used during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester. It is not known whether the active substance passes into breast milk. Breastfeeding mothers should avoid applying to the nipple area.
Store in a cool place (do not store above 25° C & do not freeze) and protected from light.
